What it is and why you need it
The digital certificate (certificado digital) is an electronic document that proves your identity online — your electronic signature. With it you can:
- file applications and sign documents with the Tax Agency, Social Security, DGT, immigration offices and town halls;
- receive official notifications electronically;
- check your tax data, employment history (vida laboral) and the status of your applications;
- book appointments and get certificates without visiting an office.
The most common certificate for individuals is issued by the FNMT (Spanish Royal Mint).
Who especially needs one
- Autónomos: Social Security sends them notifications electronically only.
- Companies: they must deal with the administration electronically and need a legal-representative certificate.
- Any resident who wants to handle paperwork online.
How it works
- Application on the FNMT website and getting your request code.
- Identity verification with your document (TIE, or NIE together with your passport). I'll tell you where and how to do it fastest.
- Download and installation on your computer, in the same browser used for the application, plus a password-protected backup.
- Phone installation, Cl@ve set-up, test login to the Tax Agency and Social Security, and notifications switched on.

The certificate expires and is renewed online in advance. If I handle your accounting, I'll remind you in time.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the digital certificate and Cl@ve?
Cl@ve is a login system using a username and an SMS or app code. The digital certificate is a full electronic signature, required for many procedures where Cl@ve isn't enough and for signing documents. Ideally you have both.
Can I get it with just an NIE, without a TIE?
Usually yes, with your NIE document plus passport. I'll confirm the procedure for your case before we start.
Can I get it from outside Spain?
Identity can also be verified at some Spanish consulates. I'll tell you which option is available to you.
What if my computer breaks?
With the backup copy, the certificate is simply reinstalled — that's why we make it right after installation. Without a backup, you'd have to apply again.
Do I need one if you handle my accounting?
Not for filing your taxes — I file them on your behalf. But it's useful for receiving notifications and checking your own data.
