What is the Spanish digital nomad visa?
The digital nomad visa is the residence permit for international teleworking under Spanish Law 14/2013. It lets you live in Spain while working remotely for an employer or clients based outside Spain.
You don't need to change jobs or start a business here — you simply move your existing remote work to Spain. Family members get residence with you, and you can travel freely in the Schengen area.
Who it's for
- Remote employees of companies outside Spain.
- Freelancers with foreign clients. Work for Spanish clients is allowed up to 20% of your total activity.
- Families: spouse or partner, children and dependent parents can apply together with the main applicant.
Requirements in 2026
- Remote work for a company or clients outside Spain, using only computer and telecommunication tools.
- Existing relationship with the employer or clients for at least 3 months; the company must have been operating for at least 1 year.
- Qualifications: a university degree, vocational qualification or business-school degree, or at least 3 years' experience in a similar role.
- Income of at least 200% of the Spanish minimum wage (SMI) — see the table below.
- Health insurance with no co-payments or waiting periods, or Social Security coverage.
- Criminal record certificates from the countries you lived in during the last 2 years, apostilled and translated.
- Social Security: proof of registration or coverage. If your country has no social security agreement with Spain, we plan this before filing.
Minimum income in 2026
The 2026 Spanish minimum wage (SMI) is €1,221 × 14 payments, i.e. €17,094 a year (Royal Decree 126/2026). The income requirement is based on it:
| Household | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Main applicant (200% SMI) | ≈ €2,849 | €34,188 |
| + first family member (75% SMI) | + ≈ €1,068 | + €12,820.50 |
| + each additional member (25% SMI) | + ≈ €356 | + €4,273.50 |
| Example: couple with one child | ≈ €4,273 | €51,282 |
Income is proven with your contract, an employer certificate, payslips or invoices and bank statements. In some cases savings in the applicant's name can be added.
Two routes: consulate or UGE
🌍 From your home country
Apply for the teleworker visa at the Spanish consulate where you live. It's valid for up to 1 year; once in Spain you apply for the 3-year residence permit.
🇪🇸 From inside Spain
If you're in Spain legally (for example, as a visitor within your permitted stay), the application is filed online with the UGE, the unit that handles these permits. Decision within 20 working days, with positive silence. Residence for 3 years, renewable for 2.
How I handle your application
- Free consultation: I review your contract, income, education and family and tell you honestly whether you qualify and which route to take.
- Document list for your case: where to get each document, what to apostille and what to translate.
- Review and preparation: employer certificate, remote-work description and forms.
- Filing with the UGE, or support with the consular application.
- Requests for documents (requerimientos): I respond until the decision.
- After approval: fingerprints and TIE card, digital certificate, registrations and choosing your tax regime.
Tax: the Beckham regime
If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain you become tax resident and are taxed on worldwide income. International teleworkers can opt for the special regime for inbound workers (the "Beckham law"): 24% on employment income up to €600,000 a year, and most foreign income taxed as for a non-resident.
The option (form 149) must be filed within 6 months of registering with Social Security. As a tax adviser I check whether it pays off for you, file the option and handle your tax returns, including form 720.
€2000 + VAT, end to end
Main applicant. Government fees, translations and apostilles extra.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply while visiting Spain as a tourist?
Yes. The UGE application can be filed from Spain as long as you are here legally — for example within your 90-day stay or on a Schengen visa. It must be filed before that permitted stay ends.
Can my employer be in any country?
Yes, as long as it is outside Spain, has been genuinely operating for at least a year and you have worked with it for at least three months.
Can freelancers apply?
Yes. Freelancers with foreign clients qualify. Work for Spanish clients can't exceed 20% of your total activity.
Can I bring my family?
Yes: spouse or partner, children and dependent parents. The income requirement rises by 75% of the SMI for the first family member and 25% for each additional one.
How long does the whole process take?
Gathering documents usually takes two to six weeks (criminal records, apostilles, translations). The UGE then has 20 working days to decide; if it doesn't answer, the application is deemed approved.
What does the €2000 include?
Case review, document list, checking and preparing the full file, forms, filing, responding to requests and follow-up until the decision. Government fees, translations, apostilles and health insurance are paid separately.
